About the Street Dance Film Festival (DSSDFF)

We invite you to the annual Destructive Steps Street Dance Film Festival (DSSDFF). Hosted by Destructive Steps, the DSSDFF hopes to create a new platform to both encourage and showcase collaborations between Australian Street Dancers and local film makers. The film festival will display a program of street dance films from local artists, picked by our panel of judges, and will also premier our new Varsity category, catered to our growing Hip Hop and Street Dance scene in the University Societies.

The Street Dance Film festival will take place on Thursday 7th September from 6pm at Red Rattler Theatre.

Expression of Interest to have your dance film shown will open here on Monday 17th July, 9am.

Film Submission & Film Eligibility

We are accepting submissions of films focused on the Australian street dance community or its street dancers. These films must have been completed AFTER the date of 1st January 2019 to be eligible. If the film has been previously published on any platform, it must be taken offline from public viewing during the duration of the Film Festival judging process and proceedings (Monday 21st August 2023 to Monday 18th September 2023).

Participants may submit multiple films. However, only one film per participant is eligible to be shortlisted in the DSSDFF.

Residency

Application is open to all temporary and permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand and persons holding visas allowing them to work and/or study in Australia or New Zealand.

Required Film Length

Minimum running time of 2mins and no more than 15 minutes running time.

Format

Applicants must submit their films and files in the following format (MPEG, MP4) to enable the DSSDFF to access material for review; such material can be uploaded to a OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox as designated by DSSDFF. Applicants are responsible for ensuring the clarity and quality of their film submitted.

Competition Closing Date

Film Submissions for the DSSDFF will close on Sunday 13 August 2023, 11:59pm. Late entries will not be accepted.

Fees

There are no entry fees.

Additional Information

Selection Process

Films will be judged by an independent panel of judges including experienced filmmakers, a member of the DSSDFF organising team and/or a community representative to ensure appreciation and diplomacy are exercised in the process.

The number of shortlisted films chosen is at the sole discretion of the DSSDFF.

Notification of Shortlisted Films

Shortlisted Films will be notified via email on Friday 19th August. All shortlisted films will be asked to be removed from public viewing during the duration of the film festival proceedings from Monday 21st August 2023 to Monday 18th September 2023.

Prizes & Awards

All films selected to be part of the DSSDFF program will be awarded a cash prize, and will also be in the running for the Destructive Steps Street Dance Film award and the Audience Award. Films entered as part of the Varsity category will in the running to receive the Destructive Steps Street Dance Film Festival Varsity Award. These awards will receive an additional cash prize and will be highlighted on our socials. Films will be reviewed by an independent judging panel.

The shortlisted films will be promoted on Destructive Steps social networks and will have their films played at the Film Festival night on Thursday 8th Sept 2022 at the Red Rattler Theatre.

The Destructive Steps Street Dance Film Award will be announced on the Film Festival night. The Audience Award will be announced online on Monday 18th Sept, 9am.

Disqualification

The DSSDFF may, at its sole discretion, disqualify a film from the DSSDFF and Competition if:

1. For any reason, the application does not comply with the aforelisted Requirements;

2. DSSDFF has reason to believe that the applicant has breached any of these Terms and Conditions, or engaged in activity that is considered unlawful or other improper misconduct that may be damaging to DSSDFF brand and principles.

3. DSSDFF considers a submission to be inappropriate, defamatory, discriminatory, offensive, or otherwise not in compliance with these Terms and Conditions.
