Destructive Steps began in 2009 as a small, grassroots dance battle created by a Bboy named Jo-1. At the time, the Australian street dance scene had limited platforms for dancers to gather, train, share knowledge, and compete at a national or international level.
Driven by a desire to connect communities and elevate street dance culture, the founders of Destructive Steps created a space where dancers could not only battle, but build relationships, exchange ideas, and experience the depth of hip hop and street dance culture beyond the studio.
The first event was modest — held in community halls with local support — but it quickly became known for its authenticity, energy, and cultural impact. Word spread throughout the region and across borders, attracting international attention and support from dancers in Asia, the Pacific, and beyond.
Over the years, Destructive Steps evolved into a four-day international festival, now recognised as the largest street dance event in Australia. It features:
- Battles in Breaking, Popping, and Hip Hop
- Workshops led by world-renowned international dancers
- Community programs, panels, and showcases
- And a platform for emerging and established artists to connect, grow, and be celebrated
Today, Destructive Steps is more than a dance event — it’s a movement built by the community, for the community. Run by Destructive Steps Dance Association Inc., a registered non-profit, the festival continues to champion youth empowerment, cultural exchange, and the artistic legacy of street dance.
What began as a passion project has grown into a cornerstone of Australia’s street dance ecosystem, bridging generations, cultures, and communities through the power of dance.
